Dear Project Coordinator,
On Thursday 2nd of May between 19:00 and 19:30, REDCap will be upgraded. During this time frame, there may be a temporary interruption in REDCap’s availability. Users will be alerted via a notification on the login page. Please consider actively informing users & participants, if deemed appropriate for your project.

In addition to the highlighted features below, we would like to inform you that after the upgrade, alerts will be displayed on data entry forms, surveys and various other project pages for projects that are either in development or have the purpose ‘Practice / Just for fun’. These alerts serve to remind project users and survey respondents that real data should not be entered in development and ‘Practice / Just for fun’ projects.
If you are currently collecting real data in a development project, please request the move to production and associated production check at the bottom of the Project Setup page as soon as possible.
Highlighted features of the upgrade include:
- Background Data Import
- Users with Data Import Tool rights can now import data using an asynchronous background process, better suited for importing large data files. After completion of the import, the user who initiated the import will receive an email notification, including any errors that may have occurred during the import process.
- If you are considering using the Background Data Import for the first time, please contact the HIRUZ REDCap team at redcap@uzgent.be for guidance.
- Longitudinal functionality for MyCap-enabled projects (MyCap is a free customizable participant-facing mobile application to capture patient reported outcomes in a REDCap project)
- MyCap-enabled projects now support longitudinal functionality, allowing. MyCap tasks to be designated to specific events and offered to MyCap participants at specified time points, relative to the Baseline Date or Install Date.
- New MyCap mobile apps have been released on Android and iOS to support this functionality. Longitudinal functionality is possible and supported in the new MyCap mobile app only (not in the MyCap Classic app).

- @SHOWCHOICE & @HIDECHOICE, with piping
- The @SHOWCHOICE action tag has been added to complement the @HIDECHOICE action tag. While the @HIDECHOICE action tag is used to hide specified choices for a multiple-choice field, the @SHOWCHOICE action tag is used to show only specified choices for a multiple-choice field.
Example:

- Along with the addition of the @SHOWCHOICE action tag, piping into the @HIDECHOICE & @SHOWCHOICE action tags is now possible, to selectively hide/show answers that were selected in previous questions.
- New functions & piping parameters for text, math & date/datetime

- replace_text(haystack, search, replace): Replaces parts of a text value with a specified replacement text value.
- concat_ws (separator, text, text, …): Joins the text from multiple text strings with a separator.

- mod (dividend,divisor) – Modulo – Returns the remainder of the (integer) division (modulo) dividend/divisor.
- exponential (number) – Exponential of e – Returns “e” (Euler’s Number) raised to the power of a number: ex.

- month() – Returns the month component of a date/datetime field.
- day() – Returns the day component of a date/datetime field.

- Update to Data Quality Rules A & B regarding required checkbox fields
- It is important to notice that (required) checkbox fields (multiple answers) for which no checkbox is indicated will be marked as a discrepancy again by Data Quality Rule A ‘Blank values’ and/or B ‘Blank values (required fields only)’.
- Along with the addition of the @SHOWCHOICE action tag, piping into the @HIDECHOICE & @SHOWCHOICE action tags is now possible, to selectively hide/show answers that were selected in previous questions.
Finally, we would like to inform you upfront that 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) will soon be gradually rolled out on https://openredcap.uzgent.be. More information will be provided in due time.
